A rattling timing chain will not cause engine damage, it's just annoying. Once the tensioner has sufficient oil pressure the chain will stop rattling. Engine damage would occur if the chain started jumping the sprockets, or if it should snap![[Bild: pleaseno.gif]](http://www.mini2.com/images/misc/pleaseno.gif)
Late build engines i.e.from 01.05.07 will need a spring operated tensioner. Engines built before this date will have a modified oil pressure tensioner see PuMa Measure 10686850.
It is quite normal for a timing chain to stretch, hence the need for a tensioner. Years ago some manufactures use timing belts, but if they were not replaced at specified intervals they could snap
with possible serious engine damage. Chain life is almost infinite provided it has plenty of lubrication and is examined at specific intervals.
I understand the new Spring Chain Tensioner is now available to dealers![[Bild: wink.gif]](http://www.mini2.com/forum/images/newsmilies/wink.gif)
